urban plasticity

how are people and place shaping each other in the city?

Beginning…

Hello! My name is Joshua, an early career research fellow with Centre-UB. This website is part of a project, Understanding behaviour in housing design, development and habitation: A neuroscience-informed urban plasticity approach. It will feature blog posts, research activities, and some testimonials about the impact the research is having along the way. We have podcasts, workshops and publications planned, all asking the question at the heart of the work: how are people and place interacting and mutually shaping each other.

The focus for the next year is to understand how resident behaviour is shaped by housing design. I also want to unravel parts of the design process to understand the behaviours of architects, developers and site managers while characterising the ecosystem that constrains this design and development process. In partnership with J49, a radical new housing association, I want to know (and contribute to) how housing is being rethought in UK cities to support the health and wellbeing of residents in community. At a time when the current government aims to build 1.5 million new homes, and at the same time is pushing a health agenda against the backdrop of a climate and ecological crisis, this project feels particularly vital.
